Melamine scandal spreads to Chinese eggs

(CNN) — The Director of Hanwei Eggs was contrite. “We solemnly apologize to consumers,” said Han Wei. “We apologize to the distributors. We solemnly declare that our company has never purchased melamine. We have never adopted melamine to the feeds or products.” But somehow melamine got into eggs produced at the company’s plant in Dailin in northeast China.

Chinese consumers were taking the news in stride. “Stop eating eggs?” asked one customer. “That’s not doable.”

Melamine is a chemical used in making plastics and fertilizer. But in recent times, it has become the badge of shame for the Chinese food industry after being illegally added to food products to suggest they contain a higher level of protein. U.N. officials are concerned that melamine has been introduced to animal feed and may turn up in chicken, pork, farmed fish and other products.

Tainted eggs from Hanwei were discovered in Hong Kong late last week; melamine was present at nearly double the maximum permissible level.

Health officials in Hong Kong say that there’s little risk to human health — and that a child would have to eat perhaps 20 eggs a day for the melamine to have an effect. Learn more about the chemical melamine »

But Wal-Mart is taking no chances. It has pulled Hanwei eggs from the shelves of its supermarkets across China. The U.S. superstore’s step has not been followed by many other retailers in China, and CNN found eggs plentiful at Beijing markets on Tuesday. Chinese consumers — by now familiar with food safety alarms — were taking the news in stride. “Stop eating eggs?” asked one woman. “That’s not doable. If there’s a problem with eggs it should be solved fundamentally. People can’t live without eggs in their daily lives.”

A younger woman had the same view: “We can’t be too serious, if we think too much about the vegetable and meat we eat, we can’t eat anything.”

The egg scare is unlikely to take on the dimensions of the tainted milk powder scandal, which has sickened more than 50,000 Chinese children and led to the deaths of four babies. Again, melamine was the culprit — and the consequences could be long-lasting.

The World Health Organization says that crystals have been found in the kidneys of some children. WHO’s regional food safety expert Anthony Hazzard told Reuters Tuesday: “We believe at this stage that it’s really the complex of melamine and cyanuric acid forming what you call crystals … they can form in the small tubules [in the kidneys] and they get bigger and can block the tubules.”

Experts say melamine’s health risks are not well known. According to Dr. Dan Blumenthal of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, “Something we don’t know is whether there is a safe amount of melamine in food. I’d rather not eat any melamine at all. There is a limit that is not based on animal studies, but we can’t be certain that even the small amount is safe in humans, especially if consumption of the chemical goes on for years.”

In the meantime, Blumenthal recommends “the prudent thing to do is to stay away from foods that might be contaminated, and this especially means infant formula and other dairy products that are coming from China.”

The Chinese leadership, long criticized by other governments for poor food safety standards, has promised action. A committee of the National People’s Congress is reviewing a new draft law. Prime Minister Wen Jiabao said last weekend, “Food is a continuous process that begins in the fields and ends on your dinner table. From production to transportation to refining to packaging to manufacture, every process needs to go through thorough and strict testing.”

That will be music to the ears of WHO. Earlier this year, the U.N. office in China produced a report on food regulations in China, criticizing the patchwork of regulatory agencies and lack of responsibility among food manufacturers. It pointed out that China had 350,000 food producers or processors with fewer than 10 employees, and oversight of them was the greatest challenge. Among the U.N.’s recommendations:

• A legal framework that is consistent nationwide;

• Food safety standards that are in harmony with international standards;

• And a unified and efficient food safety testing and inspection system.

The stakes are high for China’s food industry and its consumers. Food exports from China were worth $27 billion in 2006 and Chinese food exports to the United States have risen fivefold since 1990. Recent scandals involving melamine have led governments around the world to ban the import of certain Chinese foods; and Beijing wants to restore credibility to the “Made in China” label.

Tech giants in human rights deal

Microsoft, Google and Yahoo have signed a global code of conduct promising to offer better protection for online free speech and against official intrusion.

The Global Network Initiative follows criticism that companies were assisting governments in countries like China to censor the Internet.

The guidelines seek to limit what data should be shared with authorities, in cases where free speech is an issue.

“This is an important first step,” said Mike Posner of Human Rights First.

He told the BBC “What this is a recognition by all these tech companies, the human rights groups and social investors that there has to be a collective response to this growing problem.

“Companies need to step up to the plate and be more aggressive in challenging unwarranted government interference,” he said.

The initiative states that privacy is “a human right and guarantor of human dignity,” and the agreement commits the companies to try to resist overly broad demands for restrictions on freedom of speech and the privacy of users.

They will also assess the human rights climate in a country before concluding business deals and make sure their employees and partners follow suit.

“These principles are not going to be a silver bullet, but the most important point for me is to provide transparency,” said Danny O’Brien of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

“We have joined this initiative because we know that a wide range of groups working together can achieve much more than the company acting alone,” said Andrew McLaughlin, Google’s director of global public policy.

‘Valuable roadmap’

The impetus for such an agreement follows years of criticism that a number of businesses, including Google, Yahoo and Microsoft have complicity built what has been dubbed the “Great Firewall of China”.

Google has been accused of complying with Chinese government demands to filter internet searches to eliminate query results regarding topics such as democracy or Tiananmen Square.

Microsoft has come under attack for blocking the blog of a prominent Chinese Media researcher who posted articles critical of a management purge at the Beijing News Daily.

Canadian researchers uncovered that a Skype joint venture in China monitored users’ communications.

And a Chinese reporter Shi Tao was jailed for 10 years after Yahoo China provided his personal information to the Chinese government.

Today Yahoo co-founder and CEO Jerry Yang welcomed the new code of conduct.

“These principles provide a valuable roadmap for companies like Yahoo operating in markets where freedom of expression and privacy are unfairly restricted.

“Yahoo was founded on the belief that promoting access to information can enrich people’s lives and the principles we unveiled today reflect our determination that our actions match our values around the world,” said Mr Yang.

While China has been painted as the worst abuser, Colin Maclay of the Berkman Centre for Internet and Society at Harvard University said there are other countries and governments all over the world at fault.

“The number of states actively seeking to censor online content and access personal information is growing.

“And the means employed – technical, social, legal, political – are increasingly sophisticated, often placing internet and telecommunications companies in difficult positions.”

‘Business case’

The Global Network Initiative was drawn up by the internet companies along with human rights groups, academics and investors.

Adam Kanzer who is the managing director and general counsel at Domini Social Investments said as well as being the right thing to do, it also makes good business sense.

He told BBC News “When you see the industry being caught up in the tactics of various regimes around the world, the business case is very clear. Freedom of expression and privacy is core to their business.

“They depend on a wide open, freely accessible and secure internet. That’s what they are about. If people don’t trust the internet and believe they are secure, then that is counterproductive to their business.”

The plan has yet to receive the support of internet companies in China

The effort is already being seen by some as not going far enough.

“After two years of effort, they have ended up with so little,” said Morton Sklar executive director for the World Organisation for Human Rights USA.

“It is very little more than a broad statement of support for a general principle without any concrete backup mechanism to ensure that the guidelines will be followed.”

Mr Posner of Human Rights First disputes that and said this agreement has not been set up as a “gotcha system” but as a way “to work with companies to get them to improve what they are doing, credit them when they do it and call them out if they fail.”

While it is hoped many more companies will sign up, two European telecommunications firms, France Telecom and Vodafone, are already said to be considering adding their names.

Lacson: It’s now difficult for Bolante to hide truth on fertilizer fund scam

MANILA, Philippines – Opposition Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Wednesday said that former Agriculture undersecretary Jocelyn “Joc-Joc” Bolante may now find it hard to hide the truth in the impending Senate hearing on the P728-million fertilizer fund scam.

In a radio interview, Lacson said it will be difficult for Bolante to evade the Senate’s questions when the evidence implicating him in the fertilizer fund scam are presented.

“Pag hinarap sa ‘yo ang dokumento… at iba pang klaseng ebidensiya eh matitigalgal ‘yun. Sa dami naman naming posibleng magtanong sa kanya ay medyo mahilo siya o mag-slip at tuluyang masabi ng katotohnan (When we present the documents and different sorts of evidence to Bolante, he may stop in his track. And because many of us in the Senate will be there to ask him questions, he may be confused so he may eventually slip and tell the truth),” Lacson said.

Bolante returned to the Philippines Tuesday night after two years of detention in the United States. Immediately upon arrival, he was whisked to the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City where he remains under hospital arrest.

In a statement released through his lawyer, Antonio Zulueta, Bolante promised to answer the allegations linking him to the fertilizer fund scam, but only in the proper forum and only after undergoing medical treatment.

“Now that I am back I shall assure you I will answer any and all accusations at the proper forum,” Bolante said in the statement.

Bolante also said he had wanted to remain quiet, but realized that his silence only attracted more speculation. “The more I remain silent, the more vicious the accusations have become,” Bolante said.

While he was Agriculture undersecretary, Bolante allegedly engineered the diversion of funds allotted for poor farmers to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s campaign kitty in the 2004 elections. – Sophia Dedace, GMANews.TV

Northwest Airlines flight 71 bearing former Agriculture undersecretary Jocelyn ‘Jocjoc’ Bolante has landed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal I (NAIA) at 10:32 p.m., according to radio reports.

In a statement released to the media shortly before his arrival, the controversial government official said he will face the issues hounding him but first he must first seek medical treatment.

UPDATE: Bolante brought to St. Luke’s Medical Center for medical treatment

Upon arrival from the United States this evening, former Agriculture undersecretary Jocelyn ‘JocJoc’ Bolante was brought to the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City for medical treatment.

Bolante arrived at around 10:32 p.m. at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) via Northwest Airlines flight 71.

In a statement issued to the media, the controversial government official said he has no intention of snubbing the Senate hearings but first he must “seek a medical check-up and treatment due to mainly to the mental and physical stress and ailments brought about due to my detention in the United States.”

Bolante did not speak to the media but vowed to “fulfill my promise of saying my piece, giving my side of the story.” He also said that he is ready to face the issues and all “malicious” accusations against him.

Miracle Children: A Reason to Actually Watch Oprah Today!

Eliot was born with an undeveloped lung, a heart with a hole in it and DNA that placed faulty information into each and every cell of his body. However, that could not stop the living God from proclaiming Himself through this boy who never uttered a word. –Introduction to the 99 Balloons video story of Eliot Mooney, who outlived predictions to spend 99 precious days on this earth.

My friend Travis Terral forwarded me an email yesterday:

“If there was ever a time to watch the Oprah Winfrey show, tomorrow (Tuesday) would be the day. The show is on Miracle Children and my niece Ginny and her husband Matt were interviewed about their son Eliot’s 99 days on this earth and the impact that his life had on people all over the world. Check your local listings if you want to watch. I would advise you to get your Kleenex out.”

I had the privilege of knowing this story from the very beginning, through knowing close relatives of Matt & Ginny Mooney, who knew in advance of their son’s being born that he suffered a chromosome disorder known as Trisomy 18. Abortion was never a consideration.

Later, after little Eliot’s time here was done and the wounds had time to heal, Matt was gracious enough to write an article for Crosswalk about some of the personal things he was going through in his Christian walk. You can read that article, “A Father’s Contempt for the Commonplace,” here.

Comcast Completes Net Management Trials, Updates AUP

In the wake of a traffic throttling investigation that resulted in orders from the FCC to change its bandwidth management practice, Comcast Corp. (CMCSA) has begun updating customers on its progress toward the agency’s demands.

In a service notice, Comcast said that as part of its ongoing efforts to continuously improve the quality of it service, “We are switching to a new network congestion management technique by the end of the year.”

Comcast says the technique “is focused on managing network congestion only when and where it may occur. It will also replace the current technique and will help ensure that all of our customers receive their fair share of network resources.”

Cablecos have claimed that a relatively small number of power users are eating up a disproportionately large amount of their local network bandwidth. Comcast got caught throttling bandwidth demanding P2P traffic.

The FCC ordered Comcast to stop and swap in a new bandwidth management approach by yearend. Comcast then updated its Internet acceptable user policy, which took effect Oct. 1, to impose a 250 gigabyte monthly usage ceiling. Exceeding it twice in a series of months would result in Comcast cutting off service to the violator for a year.

That “punishment” wording seems to be missing in the updated policy, which reads: Comcast prefers to inform customers of inappropriate activities and give them a reasonable period of time in which to take corrective action. Comcast also prefers to have customers directly resolve any disputes or disagreements they may have with others, whether customers or not, without Comcast’s intervention.”

However, Comcast adds, ”If the service is used in a way that Comcast or its suppliers, in their sole discretion, believe violates this Policy, Comcast or its suppliers may take any responsive actions they deem appropriate under the circumstances with or without notice. These actions include, but are not limited to, temporary or permanent removal of content, cancellation of newsgroup posts, filtering of Internet transmissions, and the immediate suspension or termination of all or any portion of the service.” The cable giant appears to be leaving its options open.

“These actions are not Comcast’s exclusive remedies and Comcast may take any other legal or technical actions it deems appropriate with or without notice.”

Comcast said the change in network approach means “probably nothing” to its customers. “We ran five market trials of this technique over the summer and found that less than 1 percent of customers were affected.” The cableco didn’t specifically say if the affected parties were the bandwidth hogs or others.

“So,” Comcast, reasoned, “the vast majority of customers will not notice any change to their Internet experience as a result of this new technique.”

However, the cableco continued, “During the times of busiest network use (which could occur at any hour, depending on your neighborhood), those very few extraordinarily heavy users – who are doing things like conducting multiple and continuous large file transfers – may experience slightly longer response times for some online activities until the period of network congestion ends.”

Comcast says it has once again amended its acceptable use policy “as we transition to this new technique,” and posted it on its Comcast.net Web site.

Joan Holloway (aka Christina Hendricks) Drives Mad Men Mad

Mad Men may be the best unwatched show on television, and Joan Holloway may well be TV’s hottest vixen. The character is played by Christina Hendricks to devastating effect. The va-va-voom Holloway evokes an era when men where defined by scotch, cigarettes and Rat Pack bravado and women were epitomized by sex coquet Marilyn Monroe.

Last Sunday was the closing episode in the show’s second season. But don’t worry, there’s more to come. For the uninitiated, the show focuses on Sterling Cooper, a fictional 1960’s-era Madison Avenue ad agency. The 1960s setting recalls the better days of chain-smoking, office drinking and good fashion.

Red-head Holloway is the Office Manager of the agency and she exudes a kind of sexuality that has been driven out of the workplace by countless sexual harassment lawsuits. Hendricks curvaceous figure is a throwback as well, compared with today’s obsession with thinness.

In fact, most designers tend to shun her. “No one will send me dresses. Designers loan size 2 or 4 samples to actresses, but I’m not that size. It’s like I’m a freak because I’m curvy and I can’t squeeze into those things. I’ve had some problems with that,” she recently told PageSix Magazine.

Joan Holloway gets more attention than Hendricks and has developed a cult following on the Internet. Blogs and websites are dedicated to the show and her character. When one types “Joan Holloway” into a Google search, the second result is a website entitled, “What Would Joan Holloway Do?”

The website contains questions posed to Hendricks’ alter ego. Asking questions about issues from men to fashion, women around the globe want answers from Joan. The website generates answers convincingly in sassy Joan style.

Fifty-two cows have been killed by a single lightning strike in a freak accident at a ranch in Uruguay.

The cows were standing next to a metal wire when the lightning struck

Newspaper El Pais reported that the cows had pressed themselves against a wire fence during a storm when the lightning bolt struck in the northern Uruguayan state of San Jose.

A photograph released by the San Jose Police Department shows the black and brown cows lying dead in a row.

The newspaper said that vets at the scene confirmed the cause of the deaths, which happened on Wednesday.

The experts also said that cows often crowd around fences to seek protection during bad weather.

Meteorologist Fernando Torena said he was not surprised that a single lightning bolt killed so many cows.

But he called it “very bad luck”.
